Judson Roop MerrillJuly 4, 1925 – February 1, 2014Born in Gardner, Massachusetts, the only child of Donald Hersey Merrill and Marion Ella Roop, he lived there for his early years. The family moved to Portland, Maine, where he graduated from Deering High School and matriculated to Bowdoin College.US involvement in World War II interrupted his college plans when he transferred to Maine Maritime Academy and graduated in 1946 with an Ensign commission in the US Navy.He married Wayne I Moulton of Buxton, Maine on February 1, 1947 then completed his Bachelors degree from Bowdoin in 1948 and remained in the Naval Reserve for 22 years.The Korean War called him to active duty. When returning to civilian life, he earned his Masters degree in Education from Suffolk University, which ushered in his career in public school administration. He was employed by the towns of Scituate, Amesbury, and the Pentucket Regional School District, all located in Massachusetts. His career encompassed positions as a Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of schools.The family lived in Amesbury, Massachusetts for 22 years where they raised their family of 5 children. He was active in the Amesbury community, serving on the School Committee, Finance Committee, Town Meeting Member, Board of Directors of the YMCA, Little League Baseball Coach and on various committees at the Main Street Congregational Church. He was a member for 50 years with the Order of Free Masonry and was a class agent and alumni representative for the Maine Maritime Academy.Mr. Merrill is survived by Wayne Moulton, his wife of 67 years and their 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.Daughter, Pamela Mednick Clark, of Spring Hill, Florida. Her two children, Jordan Mednick of Miami, Florida and Jennifer Mednick of Orlando, Florida.Daughter, Marsha Oates Bisson and husband Donald of Spring Hill, Florida. Their four children Stacey Oates Svenson and husband Evon of Spring Hill, Florida. Ronald Oates of Dover, Florida. Jay Bisson and wife Nicole of Cape Coral, Florida. Rory Bisson of Manchester, New Hampshire.Son, Donald Emery Merrill of Cape Coral, Florida. His two children, Donald Merrill Jr. and wife Dorothy stationed in Hawaii. Katelyn Merrill of Cape Coral, Florida.Son, Bradford Judson Merrill of Gainesville, Florida. His two children, Joshua Thomas Merrill of Cape Coral, Florida. Jenneska Merrill Imhoff and husband Nicholas of Cape Coral, Florida.Son, Miles Freedom Merrill and wife Suzanne of Level Plains, Alabama. Their three children, Alexandra Merrill and husband Matthew of Auburn, Alabama. Samantha Merrill and Mary Morgan Merrill of Level Plains, Alabama.The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the scholarship fund at Maine Maritime Academy, class of 1946.
