Jack Edward Kunz flew gently into Jesus's arms early Tuesday morning, October 18th. He was born on February 25th, 1930 in Seward , Alaska to Elbert and Mary Kunz and his older sister, Dolores. He graduated from Anchorage High School and the University of Washington as a music composition major. At age 20 he traveled to Stockbridge, Massachusetts to study music with Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland at the Boston Pops' six week summer workshop at Tanglewood. After college he married Patricia Ann Robinson and was drafted into the United States Army where he spent almost two years in Heidelberg, Germany during the Korean War. He and Pat had three children, Kelly, Kevin and Colleen. Upon return from Germany he obtained his BA in music education and became a music teacher in the Lake Washington School District in Kirkland, WA. His career spanned 25 years and during those years he had published over 145 pieces of choral music for junior high school, high school and college choirs. He wrote sacred and secular music and one of his favorite genres was vocal jazz. He was a pioneer in the field of that genre and won many competitions and the praise of his colleagues.
He became a renowned clinician and adjudicator in both concert choir and jazz arenas. He is survived by his spouse, Jaima, of nearly 44 years, nine grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
