George V. Grassi's Obituary
George V. Grassi, 92, of Hudson, Fl. passed away July 3, 2015. He was native of Bronx, NY born to Luigi and Saveria (Casario) Grassi in 1923. George enlisted in the Army in July 1942. He took his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and then was sent to A.P. Hill, Virginia, where he was assigned to the 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion. In November he boarded a troop ship – the U.S.S. Monticello – and landed in Casablanca to take part in the North African Campaign. He then took part in the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. After that he boarded a troop ship bound for England. In England George was transferred to the 5th Engineer Special Brigade. He took part in the invasion of Normandy – 6 June 44 – landing on Omaha Beach at 1000 hours. When the hostilities stopped in Europe and the Pacific, George was sent home and discharged in November 1945. George joined the 742 Ordnance NYARNG in 1945, transferred to the 142 Armor in 1959, and was then sent to the 71st Infantry. But his heart was with the old 142, so after a year, he came back and finished his career with the 1st Battalion, 242 Infantry and later with the Army National Guard, finally retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant E8 . He and his loving wife Anita came to Hudson, Fl. in 1983 from Brentwood, Long Island, NY to enjoy retirement. George was a member of the Sons of Italy, St. Michaels Catholic Church and naturally a fan of the New York Yankees Baseball Team.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Anita in 1998; 7 brothers, John, Dominick, Willie, Dante, Leon, Mario and Walter; sister, Lillian; son in-law, Walter; grandson, Walter, Jr.
Mr. Grassi is survived by his 2 daughters, Regina Sollazzo and husband Michael of Spring Hill, Fl. and Georgiann Hoffman of Ocala, Fl.; 3 grandchildren Regina, Brett and Dante; 1 great-grandchild, Quinton.
