Walter W. Martin's Obituary
Walter Martin (Wally) died January 17, 2012. Born in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., he came to Spring Hill in 1997 from Evanston Ill. Cpl. Martin, a member of the 106th Infantry, was captured on December 19, 1944 at outset of Germany's last major offensive of World War II and was a Prisoner of War in Stalag IVB. Later in peacetime he was a police reporter in NYC for the old UPI news wire service. After a transfer to Chicago in 1956 he was later promoted to Sports Editor. He learned to love Florida when he was assignned to cover Spring Training. He was active in supporting Veteran's groups and causes and was a Commander of the VFW in Hastings and a Commander of the American Legion in Evanston. Wally is survived by his wife of 63 years Marguerite (Peggy); a son Chris (Diane), and daughter Laurie Wilson (Jim); two grandchildren and a great-grandson. Interment is planned for this Spring at Arlington National Cemetery. Wally was a PROUD AMERICAN who fought and suffered for his friends and country. As a friend wrote - "Another man among boys lost to us. We will never forget the sacrifices he made all these years ago for all of us. And we are grateful for having known him."
