Sonia M Price's Obituary
Sonia Mozelle (Hawk, Cole) Price, age 94, passed
away on August 27 at Suncoast Hospice Care
Center North in Palm Harbor, FL. Sonia was born
February 26, 1931 in Highland County, OH, eldest of
Everett Guy Hawk and Marjorie Marie Wilkin.
Sonia was a bright student, earning a bachelor’s
degree in education at The Ohio State University.
Sonia married Jesse Cole, Jr. in 1951 and settled
in Waverly, Ohio where they raised their only
daughter, Yolanda. Sonia started her career as
a home economics teacher at Hunting High
School in nearby Ross County. Ever the achiever,
she returned to Ohio State to earn her master’s
degree and was recruited to join the Ohio State
Department of Vocational Education as a regional
state home economics supervisor.
She married her second husband, James Harold Price, in 1975 in Columbus, Ohio where they shared a
career dedication to vocational education. She became the Head State Supervisor in Home Economics,
and eventually, the Assistant State Supervisor of all Vocational Education programs for the state, retiring
after 35 years of service. After her husband’s passing, she moved to Florida where she enjoyed retirement
with her long-time companion, James Edward Rice, whom she survived.
She is remembered by her daughter as an inspiring, creative force:
“She was the Samantha of the TV show, Betwitched, to my father’s Andy Griffith.
She had a twinkle in her eye and a creative spark that was magical. I remember
her as a trail-blazing career-woman who could whip up a mean cherry pie.”
Sonia is survived by her sister Carolyn Marie (Barker) Morris and her brother, Roland Gregory Hawk,
of Southwestern Ohio, and her daughter, Yolanda Lynn Cole and grandchild, Ava Cole Busler, of
Washington, DC.
