Robert William Northrop's Obituary
Robert William Northrop, 85, passed away June 18, 2026, at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Florida.
He was the beloved husband of Nancy Northrop, with whom he shared seven wonderful years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon Estes, who passed away in 2003 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Robert devoted himself to her care, taking early retirement to remain by her side, and the two shared many meaningful travels together, including a memorable cross-country trip to Oregon.
Born with a strong sense of dedication and achievement, Robert graduated from high school in 1958, the same year he attained the rank of Eagle Scout and earned the prestigious God and Country merit badge—the highest honors in the Boy Scouts. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri in Columbia in February 1963.
Upon graduation, Robert was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Artillery. During his active duty, he served as a Battery Executive Officer and Battalion Communications Officer, and was trained in the assembly of atomic weapons systems. He also attended specialized training in Oberammergau, Germany. Following two years of active service, he continued in the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in 1970.
Robert earned his Professional Engineer license in Illinois in 1968, beginning a distinguished 44-year career marked by dedication and stability, working for only four companies. He began with Southwestern Bell Telephone in St. Louis, Missouri, where he worked as a Facility Engineer managing both urban and rural systems. In 1969, he joined Automatic Electric in Northlake, Illinois, where he spent 20 years in roles that included product testing, procurement specifications, and management of technical publications. His work in developing automated testing programs for high-frequency data transmission over copper cable contributed to technologies still in use today.
After the closure of his division, Robert transitioned into sales of electrical surge protection products and was later recruited by Innovative Technology in Hernando County, Florida, as an Application Engineer. There, he provided technical expertise, contributed to IEEE committees developing international standards, and was recognized with an annual service award during his 10-year tenure.
Robert was a devoted father to his son, Jeff, whom he and Sharon adopted as an infant in 1967. He was deeply involved in Jeff’s life, supporting his activities, attending games and practices, and participating in YMCA Indian Guides, fostering a lifelong bond.
A man of strong faith, Robert was a lifelong member of the Baptist church, having been saved and baptized at age 12 at Third Baptist Church in St. Louis. He served faithfully in numerous leadership roles, including Deacon, Church Moderator, and chairman of several committees. At Northcliffe Baptist Church in Spring Hill, Florida, he played a key role in fundraising efforts for the construction of a 1,000-seat auditorium.
Robert will be remembered for his integrity, service, devotion to family, and unwavering faith.
