Mulford Hugh McKinnis' Obituary
It is with deep sadness and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of Hugh McKinnis, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, who left us peacefully on July 18, 2026, at the wonderful age of 93. Hugh was born on November 3, 1932, in Alabama, to his loving parents, Mulford Lee and Beatrice Lila McKinnis. He is now reunited with them, along with his brothers, Emmett and William George, in eternal rest. After bravely serving his country in the Army following high school, he pursued higher education at the University of Alabama. There he earned a degree in Business and became a proud member of the Delta Chi fraternity. His career began at Monsanto in Pensacola, Florida, where his ambition and skill led him across the nation, advancing in his field. Hugh later found his true calling in the automobile industry, owning and operating successful used car lots in Brandon and North Tampa, until his well-earned retirement. In addition to his professional achievements, Hugh's personal interests were both diverse and deeply cherished. He was an avid fisherman, relishing any opportunity to be by the water, and he found great joy in the art of pigeon racing. As a founding member of the FSI Racing Pigeon Club, Hugh's "Bama Loft" became a celebrated name within the community. His passion for singing flourished in recent years, particularly as a member of the Northcliffe Baptist Church choir, a joy he shared with his beloved wife, Billie Jean. Hugh was a man of warmth and humor, known for his country wit and ever-present smile. His kindness was a beacon to all who knew him, and his willingness to lend a helping hand to friends in need is a legacy that will be fondly remembered by many. Hugh leaves behind his devoted wife, Billie Jean, and his three children: Greg McKinnis and his wife Mindy, Todd McKinnis and his wife Debbie, and Mendy Whittemore and her husband Don. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Carey Sonnenburg and his brother, Howard McKinnis, as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. A service to celebrate Hugh's remarkable life will be held on August 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Northcliffe Baptist Church Family Center, located at 10515 Northcliffe Blvd., Spring Hill, FL. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and gratitude for the time they shared with Hugh. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Samaritan's Purse, an organization that reflects Hugh's spirit of helping others in need. Their work continues to bring hope and healing to countless lives, a cause that resonated deeply with Hugh's generous heart. As we bid farewell to Hugh, we hold dearly the memories of his laughter, his love, and his unwavering strength that touched the lives of so many. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved.
