Mary T. Braun's Obituary
Born on September 2, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, Mary was the daughter of the late Ferruccio Compostella and Angeline Compostella (née Guarise). She spent over ten years working as a secretary for Citgo, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic.
In 1998, Roger and Mary moved from the South Side of Chicago to Florida, eventually settling in The Wellington 55+ Community in Spring Hill. There, Mary truly found her second home. A vibrant and social presence, she became deeply involved in community life and was affectionately known and loved by many. For over 20 years, she proudly ran the community bingo games, faithfully visited the pool every morning, enjoyed playing Hand and Foot Canasta, and loved billiards—once even winning a competition. Mary was always an enthusiastic participant in the Fourth of July parade, embracing every opportunity to celebrate with her neighbors.
Mary was fondly known as “the Goose Lady,” decorating the two goose statues by her front door with festive outfits for every holiday. She delighted in baking Christmas cookies and pizzelles and was generous in sharing them with friends and neighbors. Always happy, loving, and caring, Mary was someone you could count on—she never hesitated to lend a helping hand and was a true friend to all who knew her.
Outside of community life, Mary and Roger enjoyed traveling together, taking regular trips each year. After Roger’s passing, she traveled less frequently but treasured a special trip to Italy in 2012 with her sister June. She also looked forward to visiting her sister Dora May in Illinois every few years.
Mary is survived by her loving sisters, June O’Connor and Dora May Billings (and her partner, Allen “Buddy” Price); her very close friend, Anna Lavergne, who was like a daughter to her; nephews: Patrick O’Connor (Lori), Michael O’Connor, and Steven Billings (Jess); grandnephews: Jackson, Sean, and Brian; grandnieces, Ivy and Sage; and cousins Eugene Compostella (Arelys), Joseph Compostella (Jennifer) and Louis Compostella (Kim).
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roger C. Braun and her brothers‑in‑law, Gael O’Connor and Jack Billings.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HPH Sturgill Hospice House in gratitude for the compassionate care provided to Mary and her family.
