Kathryn V Allen's Obituary
Kathryn V. Allen, 98, passed away Monday, January 1, 2013 at St. Mark Village in Palm Harbor. She was born January 21, 1914 in Butler Grove Township, IL to Perl and Anna Van Hyning. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pervy Allen, son, Gary Allen, brother, Rolland Van Hyning and sister, Louise V. Hanks.Kathryn spent much of her life as a stenographer for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. In 1946 she took a year off from USDA and traveled on a troop ship to Germany to work for the War Department, where she and her friends spent their free time touring Europe. Upon returning from Europe she returned to work at Agriculture and received The Certificate of Merit in recognition of her work, which substantially exceeded the requirements of her position. She loved to tell the story of seeing President F. Roosevelt in his car going to and from the White House as she walked to work down Pennsylvania Avenue.In April 1950 Kathryn married Pervy Allen. After retiring from the government, they moved from Virginia to Spring Hill, Florida in 1972. Every summer Kathryn and Pervy spent several months touring Canada and the United States to fish and sightsee. Kathryn was an artist and completed over a hundred paintings, which she gave away or sold to raise funds for the Art League in Spring Hill. In Spring Hill, she was an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. In 1997, Kathryn fulfilled her dream of living at St. Mark Village in Palm Harbor. She loved the friends she met at St. Mark as she did volunteer work in the library and helped in the chapel. All who met Kathryn appreciated her smile and fun sense of humor. Kathryn's son, Gary Allen died in 1975 and her husband of 37 years, Pervy Allen, died in 1987. She is survived by her nephew, Allen Van Hyning of Butler, Illinois, nieces Sandra Gholson of North Carolina and Deborah Charnley of Virginia, along with great nieces and nephews.A viewing will be held at Grace Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 16931 US Highway N in Hudson, Florida, on 9 January, 2013 at 9 o'clock with a graveside service following at 10:00.
