Kanawha Crawford's Obituary
Kanawha, KC, Kanoy, Dad, Pop, Grindad,
Whatever name he was called by he always had a smile in response.
KC was born in North Carolina to George and Vada Crawford. He was the last of 10 siblings to be born and the last to leave this world. He grew up in the mountains and always told stories about the farm. He helped his dad with milking the cows and plowing the fields. He shared his childhood with nieces and nephews close in age. He loved telling the stories about how much fun they had.
At 18 years old KC left the mountains of North Carolina and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He went to boot camp at Lackland Air Force base. After bootcamp he was sent to Japan and served for 3 years.
KC served 4 years before leaving the military and moved to Maryland to work for his brother Bill in drywall. It was there he met his wife and love of his life of 57 years, Peggy. After they married in 1963, KC re-enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Biloxi, MS. It was in Biloxi that their first-born son arrived, Kanawha Keith Crawford.
After staying in Biloxi for a year, they then were stationed in Omaha, Nebraska. It was in Nebraska their 2nd son was born, Craig Allen Crawford.
KC and his young family were then stationed in England where they spent 2 years making cherished memories. In 1968 the family returned to the States settling in California. KC and Peggy made the decision to leave the service and start a new chapter in their lives.
Before leaving California the last child, Cheryl Ann Crawford, was born in Sacramento, CA. KC and the family moved back to Maryland and after several years KC moved his family to Florida.
KC had an amazing ability to make friends wherever he was. He could not go anywhere in Spring Hill or Hudson that someone did not stop to say, “Hi KC”.
KC built and ran a successful drywall business, KC Drywall, eventually retiring from it. He was well respected by his builders, colleagues and customers.
KC was an amazing ‘Grindad’. He loved being with the grandchildren. He took them on golf cart rides, played in the pool and played video games with them. He was always making them giggle and they all adored him.
This obituary only lists the facts of his life, to describe who he was would take more than words can offer. He was fiercely loyal and devoted to his wife and three children. He was hysterically funny. He was generous, kind, very respectful, and immensely positive ALL of the time.
KC is survived by his son Keith and his wife Janet; his son Craig and his wife Betsy; his daughter Sherri; eight grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
KC is preceded in death by his mother, father, wife, and 9 brothers and sisters.
Funeral Services will be conducted on June 28, 2025 at Grace Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home., 16931 US-19 North, Hudson, Florida. Viewing at 12:00 pm. Service at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow immediately after.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations be made in KC’s name to any local chapter of Hospice or to Tunnel to Towers foundation.
