Josephine Burzillo's Obituary
Josephine "Jo" Burzillo, 93, of Hudson, Florida went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Jo was born in New York City to Antonio Sportiello and Maria Riccio. She loved to travel, read, play bingo and visit with her family. Jo was of the Catholic faith and will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.Jo moved to Hudson, Florida from Staten Island, New York in 1976. For the past few years, Jo spent some of her time in Syracuse, NY at her daughter and son-in-law's residence. Jo graduated from Brooklyn College, City University of New York, with a liberal arts degree in Government. She worked as a Social Worker for the City of New York, retiring in 1976. At the end of her career she was the Director of several Senior Citizens Centers on Staten Island. Prior to that, she worked for the New York City Department of Hospitals at both St. Vincents and Staten Island Hospitals, qualifying the medically indigent for financial support while hospitalized.She is survived by her only child, daughter Donna Morrison and her husband, Dr. Douglas Morrison of Syracuse, New York. Two sisters-in-law, Millie Sportiello, wife of Louis, and Charlotte Sportiello, spouse of Carmen, also survive. There are many nieces and nephews who were saddened to learn of her passing. Jo also leaves behind one "grandpuppy", Molly, who provided much comfort to and many smiles for Jo in her last years.Jo was predeceased by her husband Anthony Burzillo in 1998; her parents, Antonio and Maria Sportiello; seven brothers: Dr. Frank Sportiello, Vincent Sportiello, Louis Sportiello, Carmen Sportiello, Pasquale (Pat) Sportiello, Charles Sportiello, Joseph Sportiello; and one sister, Mary Novak.A memorial service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, January 12, 2013, at Grace Memorial Funeral Home in Hudson, Florida. In May, 2013, in honor of what would have been the month of the 70th anniversary of Jo's marriage and in recognition of her absence on Mothers Day, a celebration of life service and reception will be held in Syracuse, NY, details to be announced.As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to any agency providing relief to the victims of Super Storm Sandy, which devastated large parts of Jo's home prior to her retirement to Florida, Staten Island.
