John William Mrus' Obituary
John William Mrus, 79, of Hudson, Florida formally of Howland Township, Ohio passed away at 6:54 am Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Sturgill Hospice House in Brooksville, Florida.
He was born July 31, 1943 in Warren, Ohio the son of the late William (Bill) Mrus and Betty Jane Angstadt Mrus.
John is survived by his wife: Jane (Laughlin) Mrus to whom he was married to the past 37 years, his sister; Linda Mrus Glunt of Ohio and his son: Shon (wife Susan) Mrus of Arizona; his daughters: Dawn (husband Ron) Hoffman of Arizona and Lisa Holbrook of Kentucky; his grandchildren: Jarrod (wife Nikki) Mrus, April (husband Brandon) Schaeffer, Jessica Griffin and Jennifer (husband Trevor Widenski; and his 4 great-grandchildren.
During Johns life he worked serving the public first as a Patrolman at the Howard Police Department where he was wounded in the line of duty. He left law enforcement to enter the fire service. He first was an employee of the Champion Township (Trumbull County, Ohio) Fire Department. He then became an employee of Worthington, Sharon Township Fire Department in Franklin County, Ohio. John furthered his career in serving the public next as an employee of the Ohio Division of Vocational Education where he became one of the first EMS (Emergency Medical Services) coordinators/educators in the state. Leaving the position John returned to Trumbull County, Ohio where he was hired at the Howland Fire Department to initiate a Paramedic program. He accomplished this and Howland was one of the first Paramedic programs in the state outside metropolitan area and the first in Trumbull County. John was promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of the Howland Fire Department where he remained until his retirement.
Among the many awards he received was a Lifetime Achievement award from the Trumbull County Emergency Medical Services Committee and was also presented the Ohio EMS Hall of Fame Award.
John was proud of the fact that he was the second person to achieve the medical Technicians (NREMT) receiving the certificate card #0002. He was also proud that he helped to form Local 2786 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) at the Howland Fire Department.
A private funeral service will be held in Florida, and a Celebration of Life service will be held in Warren, Ohio on a date to be announced.
