This is the story of Fitz’s Life...
Fitzbert Alexander Crawford affectionately known as Fitzy or Phil was born in Mannings Field, Clarendon in Jamaica, West Indies on September 8, 1929 to his mother Edith Williams and his father Thomas Crawford who were both from Clarendon, Jamaica. Fitz attended school in Manchester and in Denbigh, Clarendon.
Fitz had two brothers and two sisters, Rhoda and Ivy and other siblings on his father’s side. His sisters have gone on ahead of him to meet the Lord. Fitz was a construction worker for all of his life. In his early years, as a Crane Operator he worked with several bauxite companies in Negril, Jamaica and in the Bahamas.
At the same time he received his papers to travel to the United States for the first time, he lost 3 kids in a tragic car accident in 1968. A few years later, he became a US citizen in 1975.
He spent a short time in Queens and in Brooklyn before buying a beautiful home in Uniondale, Long Island, New York where he lived for 18 years. He eventually retired from the Local Union 14 & 14B -International Union of Operating Engineers after almost 20 years. He then moved to Spring Hill, Florida in 1992 where he spent the rest of his long life. Here he met and married his loving wife, Laura Crawford who he leaves behind after almost 25 years of marriage.
Fitz was blessed to have MANY children who he loved dearly including; Norma, Gary, Joan, Donovan, Otney, Carlton, Audrey, Howard, Jennifer, Marcia, Hugh, Fitzgerald, Lisa, Eric and 4 children who pre-deceased him; Dennis, Joy, Barrington and Pam (that’s 18) plus two bonus sons Matthew & Nick.
