I have always been envious of misicians; those who have mastered their voice or chosen instruments in a way that could stir listeners.Don had mastered the trombone and shared his gift through bands ans orchestra. As he aged, playing in orchestra became less rewarding so he retired. One day while we sat and talked about music, I told him someday I'd like to try to learn the trombone. Without hesitation, he offered to loan me the Olds Ambassador he used for years with dance bands and orchestra. I was eventually ably to hear myself make music. Of course, have never been able to approach his level of skill, but it provides we with great personal satisfaction.
After I returned Don's trombone, I purchased one myself. Actually over the years I bought three. Although two were the same make and model as Don's, none had the mellow tone quality of his Olds. The reason, I believe, is that Don gave his instrument years of diligent care that approached stewardship...the same loving care he gave hie garden of palms and collection of carved wooden figures.
He is missed.
