Mrs Barbara B Brewer's Obituary
Barbara B. Brewer of Timber Pines, Spring Hill, Florida, formerly of Naperville, Illinois, died Monday, April 19 at age 86, five weeks shy of her 87th birthday. She passed away peacefully at home with her son Steve by her side.
Barbara was born in Manhattan, New York City, the seventh of eight children of Irish immigrants Michael Joseph Benson and Kathleen (Moroney) Benson. Growing up, she loved sports of all kind. She once competed in track at Madison Square Garden and was captain of her basketball team where she advocated for equal treatment with the boys. Constantly on the move, her father nicknamed her "speed." Later in life, she became an avid golfer with three holes-in-one to her credit.
In 1955, she married George C. Brewer, the love of her life and husband of nearly 65 years. George's career took them and their family from New York to Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Texas before finally settling in Naperville and ultimately retiring to Florida.
Barbara was dedicated to her family above all else and worked as a stay-at-home mom until her three children were old enough to allow her to work outside the home. She was for many years executive assistant and office manager with several home builders for whom she was the kind of ideal employee every employer dreams of: hard-working, conscientious, committed, and loyal.
She maintained many lasting friendships from her years in Naperville and met wonderful new friends in her retirement home of Timber Pines. From neighborhood gourmet clubs to holiday parties and travel around the world, Barbara lived a life rich in the enjoyment of friends and family.
Barbara is predeceased by her husband George. She is survived by her children Gregory (Maribeth), Laura Geiger (Mike Reed), and Steve; grandchildren Griffin and Peter Brewer, and Jessica, Ryan, and Faith Geiger; step-granddaughter Emma Reed; great-grandson Sagan Meadows-Geiger; and her sister Ann (Benson) Vogel.
Barbara is remembered by family and friends as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; a dear friend; and a woman of character and integrity. We, her family and friends, love and miss her, but she will live forever in our memories.
