Agnes C Zadrozny's Obituary
Agnes Cecilia (Ackerly) Zadrozny, 93, of Spring Hill, Florida passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013. She was born to Eugene Pinkney Ackerly and Juliana Eugenia (Deak) Ackerly on March 9, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up on Beadel Street in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, where she and her family were members of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. Her father died at the age of 33 from the toxic effects of exposure to mustard gas during WWI. This event led to years of financial and emotional turmoil for Agnes' family. As the oldest of the children, she worked hard to maintain good grades and set a good example for her younger brothers. She attended Queen of All Saints Elementary School and Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School for Girls, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1938. Agnes was a member of a Greenpoint social group called the "Debs". One night in the late 1930s, Agnes was at a neighborhood dance. The "Mustangs" were there, too – one of the young men in this group was John "Jay" Zadrozny. Agnes was wearing a polka-dot dress, and Jay's introductory line was "I see spots before my eyes" (the charm must have been in the delivery!) They married on September 4, 1943.For the next several years they lived with Agnes' mother in the small Beadel Street house while they worked and saved for the future. Agnes, who had exceled in mathematics at school, worked as a bookkeeper, while Jay went to school at night, and worked odd jobs during the day. On June 29, 1945, Jay graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn with his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree. John and Agnes moved to Valley Stream, on Long Island, NY, where they built a home in 1952. During the years they lived on Long Island they attended Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Malverne. Agnes became a full-time homemaker when they started a family; Jay worked as an electrical engineer for Underwriter's Laboratories until his retirement in 1983. He and Agnes retired to Spring Hill, Florida, where they made many friends, and lived happily during their senior years. During their retirement they enjoyed 47 cruise trips to destinations all over the world. They were lovingly and respectfully cared for during the last several years of their lives at The Residence at Timber Pines assisted living facility. Agnes struggled with dementia during the last years of her life, and in the last month suffered the complications of a broken hip. HPH Hospice assisted in providing compassionate care at this time.Agnes is survived by her daughter, Ann Marie Morton; son, John Joseph Zadrozny; and daughter, Bernadette Zadrozny. She leaves behind two grandsons: Sean Andrew Morton and Kevin Crosby Morton. She was preceded in death by John Stanley Zadrozny, her devoted husband of 70 years; her beloved brothers James and Eugene Ackerly; and many relatives and friends whose company she enjoyed over the course of a long life. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am Monday, January 6, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Grace Memorial Funeral Home, 16931 U.S. 19, Hudson, Florida, 34667. Phone: 727-863-5471. www.gracefuneralhomehudson.com
